What is the G4 Project?
All IB science students must complete a Group 4 Project as part of the required IB Group 4 (Science) practical program.  The following elements are expected from the Group 4 Project:
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration (Biology, Chemistry, SEHS)
  • Appreciation of the implications of science and limitations of scientific study
  • Development of teamwork
  • Development of planning skills
  • Exchange or sharing of both data collected and issues raised
  • Approximately 10 hours of involvement time

This year’s theme, inspired by the CT Single-Use Plastic Bag Fee, is for students in Biology, Chemistry, and SEHS, to work collaboratively to understand more deeply how chemicals from plastics can cause harm to the environment and/or human health, as well as to help raise awareness about the issue.

The project will be broken into the following components:
  1. Individual research to learn about what chemicals are released from plastic and how they can be harmful (Tuesday, 9/3)
  2. Collaboration with students in other science classes to discuss the effects of plastics on living things (Wednesday, 9/4)
  3. Planning an awareness campaign (ie. video, commercial, ad, song, artwork, etc.) with other students to inform people in the school about plastic’s harmful effects and a possible solution (Thursday, 9/5)
  4. Presentation of your campaign to other students and teachers (Friday, 9/6)

Following the presentations, each student will complete an individual, 50-word reflection, that describes how they contributed to the Group 4 Project. The reflection will be submitted to your classroom teacher who will send them to IB in April of 2020.

Please note: This project is mandatory in order to receive a certificate in the subject you are taking. It is not expected that you spend more than ten hours on this project (eight hours are provided in school). If you want to take the project beyond the minimum required amount of time, you may be able to use it for CAS, a service project, or as a starting point for an IA.

IB G4 Reflection - REQUIRED

After completing the group 4 project each student is required to write a reflective statement about the G4 experience.

This can include components of:
  • what you found challenging
  • what your most important contribution was
  • how your group worked as a team
  • what your specific role was and how you arrived at it
  • how successful were you at completing the assignment
  • what you might do differently

REFLECTION FORM - YOU MUST download it and save it to your computer.   From there, open, type and save.   As a safeguard against errors - type your response in a word document FIRST and copy the text into the document so you will have it in case it does not save,
